It has become a familiar scene: tourists in rented kimonos posing for photographs in front of a Shinto shrine in Kyoto. They and other visitors have brought valuable tourist dollars to the city and other locations across Japan.

But now the country’s former capital is on the frontline of a battle against “tourism pollution” that has already turned locals against visitors in cities across the world such as Venice, Barcelona and Amsterdam.　 　(The Guardian 2018/6/15)

「和訳」
レンタルの着物を着て京都の神社の前で写真のポーズを取っている観光客―もうお馴染みの光景だ。観光客やその他の訪問客は日本国内の町やその他の地方に貴重な観光収入をもたらしてきた。

しかし今では、以前日本の首都であった京都は、ベニス、バルセロナやアムステルダムのような世界中の都市で地元住民らが観光客に反発するようになった「観光公害」との戦いの最前線にいる。
※観光客が大挙して押し寄せ、道路の渋滞や交通機関の混雑、マナー面の摩擦などが住民の間に不満を生み、地域でトラブルを起こす「観光公害」が増えてきて、京都などでは社会問題となってきている
